Austin Mandolin Orchestra actively promotes mandolin family instruments and plucked string music in central Texas. We hold open rehearsals most Wednesday evenings and have seasonal performances four or more times per year. Whether we are reviving a piece from the golden age of mandolin orchestras (the early 20th century) or interpreting a new piece that we have just commissioned from a modern composer, we enjoy developing our unique sound. Our adventurous repertoire celebrates music from diverse cultures over five centuries.
We also occasionally host notable visiting artists for educational workshops and concerts to enrich our community.
A plucked string orchestra, our instrumentation includes mandolin, mandola, mandola (alto and octave), mandocello, guitar, and bass. Occasionally, we feature a guest instrument, such as recorder, oboe, marimba, ukelele, or kazoo.
Austin Mandolin Orchestra is directed by founder Joel Hobbs. Joel is a native Texan, an active composer and arranger of plucked string music, and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. For more information….
